The Box

The Box is pleased to present Armor, Naotaka Hiro’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, which features a majority of new pieces made in 2020 and 2021. Armor is a visual representation of the complications Hiro felt during the pandemic; from the physical weight of the illness of COVID-19 on his body to the political and cultural turmoil, the artist found solace in creating art as armor. The barricades and shields Hiro created in the work became a means of conservation, and a way to process anxiety and confusion about the state of his body and the world.
