La Loma Projects is thrilled to welcome you to our new exhibition space to view Hot Tropics, a show bringing together fifteen artists and asking them how they see the natural world.
“The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed.” — William Gibson
“The future” was once equated with access to technological advancement; in 2021 Gibson’s statement can easily be flipped, “the future” that is so disproportionately unfurling is one of climate precarity. Hot Tropics is ultimately a landscape show, one being staged during a protracted planetary emergency. Artists, like everyone else, are working within collapsing infrastructures, but here we see them trying to record the natural world as it is right now. Elegies, time capsules, postcards from the past – what will be made of these landscapes by those looking back?
